23rd December 2025
Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed that the $9 million prize Ghana’s Black Stars will receive for qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be deposited into the country’s newly established Sports Fund.
FIFA’s Financial Package
- Under the expanded 48-team format, every qualifying nation receives:
- $9 million – group-stage participation prize money.
- $1.5 million – preparation expenses.
- Ghana’s total guaranteed earnings: $10.5 million.
Minister’s Clarification
Adams explained that tournament revenues were a key driver behind the creation of the fund:
“One source is earnings from tournaments. For instance, FIFA will award us $9 million, while the $1.5 million is allocated for preparation. Unless there are unavoidable costs, the $9 million will go directly into the fund.”
Purpose of the Sports Fund
- Structured utilisation of revenues.
- Sustainable investment in sports infrastructure and facilities.
- Ensuring Ghana’s World Cup participation leaves a tangible legacy.
- First-time opportunity to directly link World Cup earnings to national development projects.
Potential Returns From Progression
- Round of 32: +$3 million.
- Round of 16: +$4 million.
- Further advancement brings greater financial rewards.
- Adams expressed confidence:
- “We just have to perform, and I believe we can be among the top four.”
The government intends to showcase projects that demonstrate what Ghana has achieved through its participation in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This approach marks a significant shift in Ghana’s sports financing, ensuring that World Cup revenues are not just short-term gains but catalysts for long-term infrastructure and development.
