A 29-year old Ghanaian man has landed himself in jail when he declared himself as an asylum-seeker in the United states.

The man whose name has been held anonymous for fear of deportation, said, he worried for his life after protesting against Female Genital Mutilation, hence his fled from Ghana.

His immigration journey started from South Africa, to Ecuador and he made his way through Columbia, Central America and Mexico before reaching the United States where he thought, safety.

But he was eventually housed in the James A. Musick Facility - jail in Irvine where, instead of living his American dream.

"They said: 'Put your hands on your head, don't move, stand still!' Then they handcuffed us," said the man.

"All my spirit went away from me. I thought, 'Why? What did I do?'... If you told someone in Ghana that if you go to United States to seek asylum you'll be arrested, there's no way they would believe it.

The Ghanaian asylum-seeker, who still faces deportation threat, appeared 10 times in court before his release in 2015.
