Head Porter's' popularly known as "kayayei" in Accra are going to be houses in a 600-bed hostel, the Government has announced.

The porters, mostly young girls, are going to be housed and given skills training as part of plans to provide jobs, Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta has revealed

Presenting the 2020 budget statement in Parliament on Wednesday, the Finance Minister said the construction of the hostel will begin in December 2019 at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra.

“Mr. Speaker I am happy to announce that preparations are now complete and the construction of the first 600-bed kayayei hostel will commence in Agbogbloshie next month to provide accommodation and skills training to these vulnerable young women,” he noted.

The housing of the kayayei has been a political campaign topic as far back as 2012 general election.

The president in his campaign in the 2012 and 2016 election had promised to provide housing facilities to these young girls mostly from the north, a move the president Mahama described "insulting to northers".

According to John Mahama it was better to provide decent jobs to girls than to provide houses for them to keep them into carrying other people's loads for a fee.
