Ghana and Vitoria Guimaraes left back Gideon Mensah has revealed why he decided to depart Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg for Portugal.

The left back departed Austrian Champions Red Bull Salzburg where Champions League football is on offer for Vitoria Guimaraes.

According to Gideon Mensah playing at a Champions league club while always sitting on the bench was not enough for him.

He made this known in an interview with godfred.subtrack.com.

It is not often that u see players depart perennial league champions for mid table clubs else where but the former WAFA graduate took the bold step.

“A lot of times people just talk about your decisions without understanding your context. They don’t know how you hustle. The day by day of your life is not known to them and yet they want to judge”, Gideon said.

He added that game time was central to his decision to leave Red Bull Salzburg for Vitoria Guimaraes as he was concerned about his career progression.

“I am a player and to me that means playing as many games as I can muster. I could make the easy decision and stay with Red Bull. Most players are satisfied with being in a Champions League squad and warming the bench”, he stated.

“People see your name they never actually see you play. You understand? That is just not it for me”, he concluded.

The former WAFA player joined Salzburg's feeder club Liefering on loan in 2016 before making a return to his parents club in 2017.
