Government assures full accountability for every pesewa of fuel levy

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications, has assured Ghanaians that the government will remain fully accountable for all revenues generated from the GH¢1 Dumsor Levy, stressing that strict public financial management systems are in place to ensure transparency.
His remarks follow renewed public concern and calls for greater clarity on how funds from the levy are being utilised, alongside demands from stakeholders in the petroleum sector for detailed reporting on government interventions in fuel pricing.
Speaking in an interview reported by Adomonline, Kwakye Ofosu explained that government spending is subject to multiple layers of oversight, including parliamentary approval and independent audits.
“Government has duly accounted for all monies, pesewas and cedis collected. Before every budget approval, monies spent are accounted for. The Auditor-General also probes how government has spent money,” he stated.
He emphasised that Ghana’s accountability framework leaves little room for mismanagement or concealment of public funds.
“There is no way we can elude or absolve ourselves of accountability,” he added.
Addressing fuel price relief measures, the Minister disclosed that government is reviewing several taxes as part of broader efforts to ease the burden on consumers.
“We are not just going to suspend one tax under the new measures. There are about three of them,” he noted.
He further explained that consultations are ongoing, as the taxes in question were introduced to serve specific policy objectives and require stakeholder engagement before any adjustments are made.
“They were introduced for a reason, so we have to engage all stakeholders to better understand the issues, so there is no hardship and nobody bears the brunt,” he said.
Kwakye Ofosu assured that full details of the affected taxes will be announced in the next fuel pricing window as government rolls out its relief measures.
