The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended a proposed 20% increase in public transport fares, following high-level discussions with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The decision comes in response to mounting public backlash and concerns over the lack of broader stakeholder engagement in the lead-up to the planned adjustment.
Road Transport Operators had earlier announced that fares across the country would rise by 20% starting Friday, August 8, citing provisions in the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares. The increase was set to affect shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” services, intercity (long-distance) travel, and haulage operations.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the GRTCC confirmed that the fare hike had been suspended. The Council said the move followed an agreement reached with the Ministry during their emergency meeting.
“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” the statement noted.
The GRTCC has directed all operators to continue implementing the existing 15% reduction in fares, which has been in force since May 24, 2025.
