The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced an increment in transportation fares by 10 percent starting from today Monday, September 16, 2019.

The transportation regulatory body explaining the basis for the increment said the various components that go into the running of commercial transport services in the country have gone up.

Per the new fare list, inter-city commuters who used to pay between GHc 1 to GHc 1.40, will see a 10pesewas increment while those between the range of GHc 1.50 to GHc 2.40 will see a 20pesewas increment.

In addition, commuters who used to pay between GHc 2.50 to GHc 3.50 for public transport (tro-tro) will have to pay 30pesewas more, effective today, Monday, September 16.

In a similar vein, passengers who hitherto paid between GHc 4.50 to GHc 6 for long distances will pay 50pesewas more, those who paid between GHc 20.00 and will see an alarming increase to GHc 23.00 will have to pay GHc 2.00 more.

Despite attempts by patrons of public transport to kick against this increment after it was announced by the union on Tuesday, September 10, the Union’s National Chairman, Kwame Kuma says “This is to accommodate predominantly an increase in fuel prices”
