Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante has said he has nothing against the NDC despite the leaked audio tape purported to be the voice of NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.

Prof Emmanuel Asante has said the Council’s work will not be affected by comments supposedly made by the Chairman of the opposition NDC.

“Rev. Professor Asante has nothing against the NDC and will be focused on the work that has been entrusted in his hands till he finishes his term,” he said.

Rev. Professor Asante indicated he will not comment on the contents of whatever was said on the leaked tape but “I will speak as the Chairman of the National Peace Council, a national institution that has been instituted to foster dialogue in view of peace”.

Speaking on the request by the NDC Chair that the Peace Council should mediate the meeting between the various political parties concerning the President’s call to end vigilantism, Rev. Professor Asante stressed he believes the President's call is right and the time has come for political parties, especially the two major parties to sit and find amicable solution to this problem of vigilantism in the country.

According to him, members of the Peace Council board have already met and concluded they will be happy to be members of the meeting if invited.

“The National Peace Council will be very much happy to participate in the discussion by facilitating the meeting if it is acceptable to the parties concerned. We see it as our duty, we see it as our responsibility and we will welcome the invitation to facilitate,” he said.

Prof Asante’s comments come after a leaked recording of an alleged meeting of the party’s communicators made damning claims against the Chairman.

A voice believed to be that of the party’s Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo in that tape could be heard calling for Prof Asante to be verbally abused.

“There are CSO and religious organisations especially the Peace Council Chair. For the first time, I will endorse insulting the Peace Council chair,” he said and added when the group clapped “I like that. We have already started.”
