The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has said he visited the crime scene of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections violence, 30 days after the incident.  According to him, he was there two days ago, Sunday, February 3.

Mr. David Asante Apeatu made this revelation Tuesday when he appeared before the  Emile Short Commission investigating the violence that marred the 31st January by-elections at Ayawaso West Wuogon.

By Executive Instrument, the President has set up the Emile Short Commission to among other things make a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to, the events and associated violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

This has become necessary because just hours into the by-election, some armed men clothed in National Security apparel stormed the residence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate near the La Bawalashie Presby polling station. Eyewitnesses say the armed men fired shots and attacked some agents believed to be opposition NDC agents.

Being a former head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service, Mr. Asante Apeatu stressed the need for crime scenes to be preserved immediately after crime, so as not to distort critical evidence.

He has called for national education to sensitise the general public on the need not to interfere with crime scenes.

The IGP’S visit to the crime scene appears to have come after many of the evidence including gunshot shells have been collected by ordinary civilians from the crime scene. It also comes after the Commissioners have visited the crime scene on the 1st of Match 2019.
