India will take up with Ghana the issue of the removal of a Mahatma Gandhi statue from a university in the African country’s capital city Accra, following allegations that Gandhi was racist.

Officials from the ministry of external affairs said Ghana had removed the statue from the university and was set to install it “at a safer place”.

They said that Ghana had communicated its decision to India, with the country’s officials saying the decision was taken since the “youth are more excitable” about the allegations.

India is also expected to discuss the matter bilaterally with South Africa on the sidelines of the forthcoming Brics summit in Goa. Gandhi had spent a part of his youth in South Africa, where he began his political activism.
