Interior Minister to face Parliament over Kidnapping of diplomats and others

The minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, is likely to be hauled before Parliament to answer questions on the recent cases of kidnappings in Ghana.
He is expected to brief the house on the security situation in Ghana vis-a-vis the implications on Ghana’s foreign relations.
The intent to invite him to the House follows a call by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to nip the unfortunate incident in the bud.
Ablakwa, who is also the ranking member on the foreign affairs committee in the House, explained that Ghanaians need to be assured the security agencies are on their toes.
He added that the cases of the kidnapping of the three Takoradi girls, two Canadian citizens, an Indian businessman and an Estonian are a cause for concern.
According to a Graphic.com.gh report, he went on to say that the kidnap of the Canadians, Bailen Chitty, 19 years, and Lauren Patricia Catherine, 20 years, has received wide publication by the international media, including the BBC.
Ablakwa expressed fears that the publications had the tendency to affect the country's image as a safe haven for investors.
To him, Ghanaians had entrusted the security of the country to the government, and therefore, it was important for the minister of interior to keep the legislators updated about the security situation.
