The Independent People’s Party (IPP) has thrown its weight behind the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to wrest political power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

This follows the disqualification of the party’s presidential nominee, Mr Kofi Akpaloo, by the Electoral Commission (EC) from contesting in the 2016 presidential election.

Addressing the media in Accra yesterday, the party's General Secretary, Mr Kwame Owusu Achampem Boadu, explained that  the decision to support the NPP was born out of the two parties’ shared  vision with regard to job creation.

"There are similarities between the two manifestoes like creating 250 factories nationwide," he was quoted as saying.

Brilliant ideas

He stressed that apart from job creation, the IPP had brilliant ideas that could transform the fortunes of the country.

He mentioned policies such as child benefits, monthly payment of hundred cedis as unemployment benefit and training of more professionals to meet the job market.

However, in their quest to ensuring that these ideas are not shelved following their disqualification by the EC, the party, upon consensus, has decided to support the NPP to win the upcoming election, Mr Boadu stated.

Background

The IPP's presidential nominee early this month was disqualified by the EC on grounds that the number of subscribers to his nomination forms did not meet the EC's requirements and that three of his subscribers supported a different candidate.

The presidential nominee as such threatened to sue the EC in the hope that the court would quash his disqualification and allow him make the necessary corrections.
