A member of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) communications team, Ellen Daaku, has defended former President John Agyekum Kufuor's recent endorsement of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP's presidential candidate.

In a panel discussion on TV3 New Day on November 21, 2024, she emphasised that, as a founding member of the NPP, the former President is well within his rights to endorse any candidate from his own party.

"I find it quite funny that people are up in arms against Kufuor endorsing Bawumia. The last time I checked, former President Kufuor was one of the founding members of the NPP.

"President Kufuor hasn't told anyone he has left the NPP. He is still an NPP member, and I am sure he is going to be an NPP member for the rest of his life," she stated.

The NPP communicator questioned whether critics expected Kufuor to support opposition candidates like John Dramani Mahama of the NDC or Nana Akosua Frimpomaa of the Convention People's Party (CPP), suggesting that such a move would be out of character for a statesman like Kufuor.

"So, if an NPP member, a former President, decides to endorse the candidature of his party member, why are we up in arms about it?

"Were we expecting Kufuor to endorse John Mahama or Nana Akosua Frimpomaa from the CPP? Or any of the other candidates? That would be totally out of character," she added.

Kufuor has endorsed Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency, highlighting his understanding of technology and global trends as critical factors for Ghana's future development.

He emphasised that Bawumia’s expertise in these areas, coupled with his extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, makes him well-equipped to lead the country towards a transformative future.
