Although it is the duty of the government to fix deplorable roads in our communities, but we must also understand that it cannot do so many things at go, sometimes we as citizens could step in, then figure out what the government is supposed to do that it isn't not doing, and then follow the jobs we choose to completion.

Residents of Japan Motors in the Adenta Municipality of the Greater Accra Region have contributed money to aid the repair of deplorable roads in the community.

The leader of the community, Mrs Princess Obaapa explaining why they mobilized themselves in the area to raise funds to repair deplorable roads that pose threat to residents in the area, said they are doing that to lessen the burden of government.

According to her, gutters get flooded whenever it rains and as a result not less than ten people have drowned, and that taking the step to abrogating it by raising money from their own coffers to aid in the renovation of bad roads seems like the right course of action.

She affirmed that anyone who uses saloon car can’t stay in the area because of the nature of the roads, but she indicated that after repairing the roads; "cars are able to move freely without any hindrance. She indicated those who declined to pay are now eager to pay after witnessing the good work done".

Mrs Obaapa added that, for the first phase of their voluntary initiated projected, they are tackling areas that hinder the mobility of vehicles and prone to cause motor accidents.

She cited foreign countries as an example for Ghanaians to follow- countries where the government are in charge of constructing and repairing main roads, with communities taking charge of minor roads.

In furtherance, she disclosed that some residents contributed an amount of GHC500 while others paid GHC1,000 to support the repairing of the deplorable roads.

She believes it is better to think about the vulnerable people in society particularly children and women.

Again, she raised questions about the capabilities of the Member of Parliament for Adenta, Yaw Buaben Asamoah as she believes the latter has neglected the constituency.

“Since he assumed office, he has not done anything beneficial to the people and that is a problem. But we the neighbours are going in accordance to what the President said that we should be citizens and not spectators” she said.
