Jordan Ayew was introduced as a second-half substitute as an Albert Adomah assist helped Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday

Villa extended their unbeaten record under Steve Bruce to six Championship games with a draw at second-placed Albion, although they may rue dropping points after taking a first-half lead.

The draw takes the Villains up to 13th on 22 points, as they continue their steady climb up the table.

Nathan Baker had headed Villa in front from an Adomah delivery after just 20 minutes, but Glenn Murray secured a point for Chris Hughton’s side by equalising just before half-time.

Ayew, who was returning from international duty with Ghana where he featured for 90 minutes in the 2-0 loss to Egypt, had to settle for a place on the bench until he was brought on in the 55th minute for Gabriel Agbonlahor.

He would soon come close to netting the winner as he combined with Adomah, before seeing his shot deflected, with Ashley Westwood driving the rebound over from close range.

The Seagulls also survived another scare when Ivorian frontman Jonathan Kodjia headed an Adomah set-piece against the top of the bar.

Benin international Rudy Gestede could not make it off the bench for Villa, whilst Cameroon’s Gaetan Bong played for Brighton.
