24th November 2024
Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew scored a stoppage-time penalty in Leicester City's 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.
The late goal provided a consolation for the Foxes, who struggled throughout the match on a wet afternoon at the King Power Stadium.
Ayew, making a swift recovery from injury, entered the game in the 71st minute as a substitute for Wilfried Ndidi.
He confidently converted from the spot in the 95th minute after Bobby de Cordova-Reid was fouled in the box by Romeo Lavia.
Chelsea opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson, who battled past defender Wout Faes to finish a long ball from Enzo Fernandez.
Enzo Fernandez then doubled the lead, heading home on the rebound after Mads Hermansen saved Jackson's initial shot.
Leicester, reeling from an early injury to key midfielder Harry Winks, struggled to create chances.
Their first significant opportunity came in the 39th minute when Kasey McAteer’s shot narrowly missed the bottom corner. Ndidi wasted another opportunity just before halftime.
Chelsea dominated with over 66% possession, seeing additional chances go begging.
Noni Madueke had a goal disallowed for offside, while Moises Caicedo and Joao Felix missed opportunities. Cole Palmer also saw a shot blocked by teammate Madueke in an unfortunate sequence early in the second half.
The win moved Chelsea up to third in the Premier League table with 22 points, while Leicester remained 16th with 10 points.
Ayew, who joined Leicester from Crystal Palace in the summer, now has two goals in 11 league appearances in his debut season for the Foxes.
