Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United and their traditional rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool will do battle for the Premier League title this season.

The 2015/16 Premier League campaign threw up a surprise as Leicester City were crowned champions by a 10-point margin over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur as the so-called big clubs struggled.

The Citizens secured a place in the Champions League thanks to a fourth-place finish marginally ahead of United, while Liverpool finished in a disappointing eighth place.

Mourinho’s former employers Chelsea did even worse as the west London side ended the campaign in tenth place after Guus Hiddink failed to reverse their slump under the Portuguese coach.

The 53-year-old, who won his last Premier League title with Chelsea in 2015, has tipped all the big clubs to be in the running for the top-flight crown this season.

“I think that more points will be needed to win the competition because many of the top teams underperformed last year, which was amazing for the beauty of the competition,” Mourinho told his pre-match media conference at Carrington on Friday afternoon.

“I think the top teams will go back to normality this year, but only one can win it.”

United have secured back-to-back Premier League victories over Bournemouth and Southampton to leave the 20-time English champions at the top of the table.
