Former Black Stars player and coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has been unveiled as the new head coach of Gor Mahia FC, the record holders of the FKF Premier League.

The 52-year-old Ghanaian signed a two-year contract with the Kenyan giants and will be supported by a Ghanaian technical team, as the club embarks on a new chapter following a turbulent campaign.

Akonnor will be assisted by Bismark Kobby-Mensah, while Ben Owu has been appointed as the goalkeeper's trainer.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach. The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned tactician. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor,” the club announced on social media.

Akonnor’s appointment signals Gor Mahia’s ambition to restore their dominance on the domestic front and make a strong impression in CAF inter-club competitions. The club is banking on his international exposure and proven track record in African football to guide them through this rebuilding phase.

This marks Akonnor’s first coaching role outside Ghana, having previously managed Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, AshantiGold, and Dreams FC. He also had a stint with Right To Dream Academy and began his coaching journey with Sekondi Eleven Wise.

A former captain of the Black Stars, Akonnor enjoyed a decorated playing career in Germany, featuring for clubs like Fortuna Köln and VfL Wolfsburg, where he also captained the side.

Gor Mahia, who remain Kenya’s most successful football club, will hope Akonnor’s leadership helps them return to the summit of African football.
