Fisherfolk in Keta, Volta Region, are celebrating a bumper catch from recent fishing expeditions in the first week of August 2025—a development bringing joy, relief, and optimism to the coastal community.

The abundant harvest, featuring varieties such as tilapia and anchovies, is being credited to favourable fishing conditions and adherence to sustainable fishing practices.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), fisherman Simon Tettey said the bumper catch is expected to significantly boost the local economy through increased sales and income.

“This harvest will improve our livelihoods and that of other fishermen and their families. We are hopeful for even better catches in the days ahead,” he noted. He added that higher incomes would enable fisherfolk to access better healthcare, education, and other essential services, enhancing community well-being.

Fishing communities such as Tetevikope, Abutiakope, Dzelukope, Kedzikope, and Vodza are marking the bumper season with great enthusiasm. Fishermen expressed gratitude to authorities, stakeholders, and the gods for blessings during the recently concluded closed fishing season, which exempted artisanal fishers.

They described the harvest as a welcome change after years of challenges, noting its potential to strengthen food security and drive economic growth.

However, Madam Mawufemor Woadi, a fishmonger, cautioned that challenges remain, including illegal fishing practices and the impact of climate change on fish stocks. She called on stakeholders and fishing authorities to step up support and protection to sustain the industry.

She also urged fisherfolk to commit to sustainable practices and collective action to protect marine ecosystems.

Some residents who spoke to the GNA expressed excitement over the harvest and appealed for affordable fish prices to ensure the benefits reach all community members.

The Keta Municipal Assembly and other authorities have pledged support for the fishing sector, including improved infrastructure and equipment, to help boost production and enhance livelihoods.
