The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has impounded 22 commercial vehicles for violating recently approved transport fare regulations in the Ashanti Region.
The enforcement operation, led by the KMA Taskforce, took place on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi. Offending drivers were found charging unapproved fares, contrary to the 15 per cent fare reduction agreed upon by transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.
As part of the enforcement measures, the KMA imposed fines ranging between GH₵500 and GH₵1,000 on the vehicles involved. The Assembly has also warned that repeat offenders risk prosecution.
Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of the KMA’s Transport Department, said in an interview with Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with the new fare structure.
He emphasized that the taskforce will intensify monitoring and enforcement activities in the coming weeks.
He revealed that despite prior warnings, some commercial drivers continued to charge passengers above the approved fares, with some even increasing rates during evening hours. The Assembly received several complaints from the public regarding these practices.
Mr. Wilson advised commuters to board vehicles only at authorized stations and to patronize vehicles that display official KMA stickers, indicating compliance.
He also cautioned drivers against picking up passengers at unauthorized locations, warning that such acts will attract fines of up to GH₵1,000 and possible arrests.
The KMA reiterated its commitment to regulating transport operations in the city to ensure fairness, affordability, and order within the transport sector.
