La Liga Promotion: Ghanaian midfielder Sibo make history with Real Oviedo

Ghanaian midfielder, Kwasi Sibo achieves a long-awaited La Liga promotion with Real Oviedo.

The 26 year old former Cheetah FC midfielder made history with “The Blues” of the city of Asturias on Saturday, June 21st as he and his teammates etched their names in gold, in history books as they battled it out for 120 minutes to grab the triumph.

Sibo started the game and played full throttle in the 90-minute regulation period before the game went on to Extra Time as it was tied in a 2-2 stalemate on aggregate.

Kwasi Sibo was one of the only 4 outfield players to finish the two-hour game at home as they were able to emerge victorious against all odds in the playoff final against Mirandes.

Prior to the final, Sibo and his team who finished fourth place in the Spanish Segunda (Second) Division were able to win a 3-2 aggregate in the semifinals games against 6th placed Almeria in the Spanish LaLiga 2 playoffs.

Sibo celebrates La Liga triumph 

Sibo and Real Oviedo saw a dream come true after a 24-year wait as he was instrumental in all the efforts of Real Oviedo throughout the season before clinching this monumental glory. He joined the Spanish side in thw summer of 2024 as he began the season with Real Oviedo, becoming a consistent player in the squad and giving it his all whenever called upon.

He left Ghana in 2017 when he was with Cheetah FC and joined FC Urartu in Armenia, spent the 2017-2018 season there before joining English outfit, FC Watford and was loaned out to Skënderbeu Korçe in Albania in 2019 before another loan spell in Spain with Ibiza where he spent two seasons from 2019-2021.

He stayed in Spain and had spells with Real Betis and played in the B side as well as SD Amorebieta in the Spanish Second Division from 2022-2024 before the breakthrough season with Real Oviedo in the 2024/2025 season.
 

Sibo making Ghana proud in Spain

Sibo kept hoisting the flag of Ghana so high in Spain as he started 24 out of 34 LaLiga 2 games and had a goal and assist apiece. He is optimistic of another big season with the Asturias outfit as they look to stay in the top flight for a longer period than the 24-year wait.
