A board member of Accra Hearts of Oak, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has blamed poor leadership structures for the recent struggles of Ghana’s two most successful football clubs.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said the challenges facing both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are not due to a lack of talent on the pitch, but rather failures at the administrative level.

“The challenges facing Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are fundamentally a leadership responsibility,” he said.

Once dominant forces in Ghanaian football, the two clubs have seen their fortunes decline in recent years. Both sides have struggled for consistency in the Ghana Premier League, with emerging teams increasingly challenging their long-held dominance.

Their difficulties have also extended to continental competitions. Early exits from tournaments organised by the Confederation of African Football have become more common, a stark contrast to their historic successes on the African stage.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the downturn reflects deeper structural issues, warning that without more accountable and forward-thinking leadership, attempts to revive the clubs may fall short.

He stressed that rebuilding the legacy of Ghana’s traditional football powerhouses will require not just investment in players, but a fundamental shift in governance and long-term strategy.
