7th November 2023
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has charged the Youth of Africa to help change the narrative of Africa's story by uniting its front to propel a million dreams to the next level, transcending not only geographical boundaries but also the limitations that have hindered the full realization of Africa's potential.
According to him, the Akufo-Addo-led government has reiterated its commitment to empowering the youth with the knowledge and dexterity requisite to counter the threats of climate change.
The Sector Minister said this at the celebration of the 2023 Africa Youth Day, held in Accra, where he extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Africa Union Commission's Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate for bringing together this gathering of exceptional young minds who are the future of the continent.
Speaking further he noted that Africa Youth Day is not just a day; it is a movement, a beacon of hope, and a celebration of the vibrant, dynamic, and resolute young generation of Africa.
He explained that "It was established to recognize the unified voice of our young people, to emphasize the significance of youth participation, and to foster partnerships that empower our youth to lead our continent into a brighter future".
He said "This year's theme, "1 Million Next Level Is Knocking: A Youth-Led Movement That Transcends Borders," resonates deeply with the challenges and aspirations of our youth. It calls for a united front to propel a million dreams to the next level, transcending not only geographical boundaries but also the limitations that have hindered the full realization of Africa's potential".
He added "In Ghana, we understand the vitality of our youth and have implemented youth-centered policies that directly address the challenges they face. We have embarked on a journey to harness the latent energies of our young population, and several initiatives bear testament to our commitment".
On the YouStart Programme, he said "Our government recognises the power of youth entrepreneurship. We have introduced the YouStart Programme, which provides young entrepreneurs with the essential tools and resources to turn their innovative ideas into thriving businesses. The program focuses on fostering creativity, innovation, and financial inclusion".
He added " As we commemorate Africa Youth Day, let us commit ourselves to amplify the voices of our youth, promote entrepreneurship, and empower the dreamers and doers among us. Let us be the change we wish to see, and together, let us make the Africa we want a reality".
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Akosua Manu, who spoke on behalf of her boss, Pious Hadzide, noted that the NYA has actively promoted these ideals by organizing various events, seminars, and workshops that foster youth participation, advocacy, and empowerment. We have encouraged our youth to voice their concerns, engage in dialogue, and be the catalysts for change in society.
She explained that the NYA reaffirmed its commitment to showcasing entrepreneurial innovation, creating a supportive environment for our young entrepreneurs, and empowering them with the practical knowledge and essential skills needed to succeed in the business world.
She added that the NYA, in collaboration with various partners, continues to pave the way for youth-led initiatives that transcend borders, embodying the theme of this year's celebration.
She said according to recent surveys, over 60% of Ghanaian youth demonstrate an interest in starting their businesses, adding that this innate entrepreneurial spirit is a valuable resource that, when harnessed, can propel our nation toward economic development and job creation, which aligns perfectly with SDG 8's aim to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth.
"As we embark on this journey to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of our youth, let us be mindful of the impact it will have on our nation's development" she added.
The Deputy CEO, however, urged the Youth to engage actively in the activities lined up for this celebration and also use the platform to create meaningful connections and collaborations that will propel us to the next level.
