Mahama announces plans for ISO-Certified Gold Assay Lab by 2026 to boost export value

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to establish an internationally accredited gold assay laboratory by 2026 as part of Ghana’s efforts to refine more gold locally, enhance export earnings, and meet global standards.
Speaking at the inauguration of the GoldBod Task Force on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the importance of maximizing the value of Ghana’s abundant natural resources—including gold and diamonds—to support broader economic development.
“To ensure compliance with international export standards, plans are underway to establish an ISO-certified assay laboratory by the year 2026—by next year,” the President announced.
He explained that the facility will serve a critical role in certifying the quality and purity of gold intended for export, aligning with international trade requirements and reinforcing Ghana’s credibility in the global bullion market.
President Mahama also reaffirmed the government’s long-term vision of refining 100% of Ghana’s gold domestically prior to export. He noted that the shift from exporting raw gold (dore bars) to refined bullion would significantly increase the country’s earnings from gold exports.
“Ghana will transition to bullion exports and refine more of our gold locally. Our intention is to eventually refine all our gold before export because the value difference between refined gold and dore bars is substantial. This means we can generate more revenue from our mineral resources,” he explained.
The establishment of the Gold Assay Lab is a key component of the broader agenda outlined in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which seeks to formalize the mining sector and elevate Ghana’s role in the global gold market.
The newly inaugurated GoldBod Task Force is expected to complement these efforts by combating gold smuggling and improving oversight within the industry.
President Mahama expressed confidence that these strategic reforms would position Ghana as a global leader in ethical, high-value gold exports in the years ahead.
