This was announced by the Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Ernest Addison at a press conference in Accra on Friday.

Explaining the rationale for the development, the governor said the face value of the cedi compared to the US dollar over the past 12 years had eroded due to sustained periods of high inflation and depreciation.

But the Vice Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Edward Dery told Adom News the move by the Central Bank is a disgrace and waste of tax payers’ money.

“These new notes are really a waste of our money and won’t add any value to our currency. How much has this cost us? They should tell the cost of printing these notes and the rationale behind it” he said.

He said the BoG and the government should rather concentrate on how to stabilise the cedi against other major international currencies.
