Miracles Aboagye Says He No Longer Feels Safe, Defends NPP’s ‘Democracy Under Attack’ Protest
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says he fears Ghana’s democratic freedoms are under threat under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
His remarks come ahead of the NPP’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration scheduled for Thursday, August 6, which the party says is intended to defend constitutional governance, the rule of law and the fundamental rights of citizens.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, August 5, Mr Aboagye said the planned protest reflects growing concerns among many Ghanaians who believe they could face consequences simply for expressing their opinions on national issues.
He disclosed that he personally no longer feels secure because of his outspoken nature and his passion for public debate, arguing that no citizen should fear repercussions for exercising the right to free expression.
“I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I told you I have written to the Chief Justice. I personally don’t feel safe because I talk and I can’t stop talking. I love to talk, and I love to debate.”
Mr Aboagye added that he fears his outspoken views could expose him to difficulties, insisting that many supporters expected to join the demonstration share similar concerns.
“I feel that my mouth will put me into trouble. That is what I feel, and it is not just me. So the thousands of people who are coming on the streets tomorrow, that is how most of them feel. That if we don’t have anything in Ghana, it is our free speech. It is our democracy. It is the fact that we are able to freely express ourselves without any fear of being targeted.”
According to him, the protest is intended to send a clear message about the need to protect Ghana’s democratic institutions and preserve the constitutional freedoms that citizens have enjoyed over the years.
The NPP has maintained that the demonstration is aimed at advocating for the protection of democracy, free speech and the rule of law amid what it describes as growing concerns over the country’s democratic environment.
