Mobile money (MoMo) transactions in Ghana reached a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, highlighting the growing dominance of digital payments in the country’s financial system, according to the latest Bank of Ghana Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

The December figure marked the highest monthly total for the year, driven by festive-season spending and the continued expansion of mobile money services.

Transaction volumes rose to 982 million in December, up from 892 million in November, reflecting both increased consumer activity and wider adoption of digital payment platforms.

Active mobile money accounts grew sharply to 26.7 million in December, from 25.5 million in November, while total registered accounts climbed to 80.5 million, underscoring ongoing progress in financial inclusion.

The mobile money agent network also expanded, with 491,000 active agents recorded by year-end.

Balances held in mobile money wallets surged to GH¢39.6 billion, the highest level in 2025, indicating stronger liquidity within the digital payments ecosystem and rising confidence in mobile wallets as a store of value.

Interoperable mobile money transactions also strengthened, with values rising to GH¢5.8 billion in December, up from GH¢4.9 billion in November, supported by increased cross-network transfers during the holiday period.

In comparison, traditional payment methods continued to play a smaller role. Cheque transactions totalled GH¢37.3 billion, well below mobile money values, while electronic platforms such as GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transactions for the month.

Overall, the data confirms mobile money’s central role in Ghana’s retail payments system, with seasonal spending, rising smartphone adoption, and ongoing agent network growth expected to sustain momentum into 2026.
