16th August 2025
MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) Ghana’s largest mobile money operator, has announced a nationwide service blackout on Sunday, August 17, 2025, to enable a critical system upgrade.
The downtime will last six hours, from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., during which all MoMo services—including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and merchant payments—will be completely unavailable.
Confirming the development, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, said the exercise is aimed at enhancing performance and security.
“Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 a.m. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding,” Mr. Assah told Citi FM.
The announcement is particularly significant for millions of Ghanaians who rely on MoMo as their primary financial tool. The platform processes billions of cedis in transactions each month and remains central to the country’s drive toward financial inclusion.
According to MTN Ghana, the upgrade will:
- Enhance service delivery and transaction speeds,
- Strengthen anti-fraud security measures, and
- Lay the groundwork for future digital innovations.
The company further assured customers that all funds will remain safe during the maintenance period and that services will resume immediately after the upgrade.
Customers and businesses are advised to complete urgent transactions before the scheduled outage to avoid disruptions to their financial activities.
