Murder Trial of Woman Accused of Killing Canadian-Based Boyfriend Adjourned Over Absent Juror
The murder trial of Safina Mohammed Adizatu, the student accused of killing her Canadian-based boyfriend, Frank Kofi Osei, has been adjourned to July 27, 2026, after one of the jurors failed to appear before the Accra High Court.
The court postponed proceedings to allow for the replacement of the absent juror. Following consultations between the prosecution and the defence, a replacement was selected and sworn in, restoring the seven-member jury required to hear the case.
Before adjourning the matter, the trial judge instructed the jurors not to discuss the case with anyone or follow media reports and social media commentary related to the trial.
The court also directed the jurors to maintain strict confidentiality throughout the proceedings and warned that any juror who fails to attend future sittings without a valid excuse could face sanctions.
When the trial resumes on July 27, both the prosecution and the defence are expected to present their opening statements before the court proceeds to a case management conference.
The prosecution is also expected to call its first witness.
Safina has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder in connection with the death of Frank Kofi Osei and remains on bail pending the outcome of the trial.
According to the prosecution, Osei travelled from Canada and spent the night of July 24, 2022, at Safina’s residence at Ashaley Botwe School Junction in Accra.
The state alleges that Safina, acting together with other individuals, attacked Osei, resulting in his death through stabbing and strangulation.
Prosecutors further claim the accused and her alleged accomplices attempted to conceal the crime by cleaning the scene, leaving the body inside the room for approximately a day before moving it outside the house near the deceased’s vehicle.
The prosecution also alleges that Safina later contacted the police, claiming her boyfriend had died in her room.
However, investigators who responded to the report reportedly found Osei’s body outside the residence, prompting officers to arrest Safina to assist with investigations.
The trial is expected to continue later this month as the court begins hearing evidence in the high-profile murder case.
