Information Minister, Mustapha Hameed, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of circulating a fake news report that suggested that President Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated George Weah's opponent in Liberia's presidential runoff elections.

The news which went viral has been denied by the seat of Government to be false, describing it as a malicious fabrication purported by opponents of Government.

President Akufo-Addo was reported to have called the current vice president of Liberia, Mr Joseph Boakai who is in a close race with former football star George Weah to congratulate the latter for emerging as winner of the rerun held on December 26.

In a statement by the Information Minister to debunk the news, he said the fake news has been making rounds on "news portals belonging to political opponents of government, and being circulated on social media by political opponents".

He added that the President has made no such call and they are waiting for the electoral commission of Liberia to officially declare the results before any action will be taken.

Results of the presidential re-run are expected on Friday, 29 December.

The attention of the Office of the President has been drawn to a false news report that President Akufo-Addo has congratulated one of the contestants in Liberia's Presidential run-off.

Unsurprisingly, this fake news is making the rounds on news portals belonging to political opponents of government, and being circulated on social media by political opponents.

We wish to state categorically that the President has made no such call, and we urge Ghanaians to disregard this false news. Just like the rest of the world, we will await the results of the run-off as declared by Liberia's Electoral Commission.
