The Member of Parliament for Builsa South has slammed the government for the delegation sent to meet Menzgold boss, Nana Appiah Mensah.

According to Clement Apaak, there is no evidence to prove the fruitfulness of the trip hence making it a waste of taxpayers’ money.

“They have not provided any evidence to convince Ghanaians that indeed what they claim to be the case is credible, until we get specifics about that trip, we have every reason to be suspicious,” Dr. Apaak told Roland Walker on the AM Show on the Joy News channel Monday.

The legislator also questioned why the government did not send the “Ambassador at Large,” Edward Mahama to the United Arab Emirates but rather decided to fly a delegation from Ghana.

“This trip was futile and certainly a waste of taxpayers’ money,” he reiterated.

Dr. Apaak’s comments follow a government delegation’s trip to the United Arab Emirates where the CEO of gold dealership firm, Menzgold, is facing charges for what the authorities say is a deal gone bad.

The Ghanaian delegation had gone to the UAE to negotiate with the authorities of the Arabian country in a bid to extradite the embattled businessman to Ghana to face different charges at home.

Nana Appiah Mensah is accused of defrauding over 60,000 persons who invested in his Menzgold firm, which has been described as experts as a Ponzi scheme.

The investors were promised a 10% returns per month on their gold deposits, however, ever since the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ordered a shutdown of the non-regulated aspect of the business, Menzgold has defaulted in paying the returns and also failed to pay the initial deposits.

Dr. Apaak said he doubts the veracity of the police statement – which reveals the outcome of the visit to UAE –  because according to him, there is no evidence to support information put out.

He added that the Minority in Parliament had predicted the outcome of the trip but the government ignored them.

“Our ranking member, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said it,” he noted.
