Governance Expert and Dean of Graduate Studies at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Dr Eric Oduro Osae has said ex President John Mahama’s decision to contest the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearership slot will only jeopardize the party’s chances of winning the 2020 general elections.

The NDC, currently has 11 candidates showing their interest to lead the party into the crucial elections.

Speaking on News File Saturday, Dr Eric Oduro Osae stated that the ex President will do himself a lot of good if he bows out of the race.

“…If you tell Ghanaians that you owe God and country a duty to bring NDC back you cannot only do that when you are the Flagbearer, you can do that in other capacities. I think it’s about time strategy wise , what Ghanaians may be looking out for in 2020 may be, maybe the Mahama record and another value addition. So who can bring that value addition to help the NDC recapture power.

If you ask me I’m saying that if he can step down and allow the other candidates to go through the mill, join forces with ex President Rawlings to build the party support them to capture power. He can come in an win the primaries but as to whether he can win the national election is another matter.

“At this stage they[NDC] need a candidate who will be appealing to floating voters and the elite because NDC , I tell you if you look at the Northern Southern middle belt balance and you look at the dynamics and you look at one who can attract the floating voters Alabi stands tall.”

Former president John Dramani Mahama on August 23, 2018 presented his letter of intent to contest for the flagbearer position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of election 2020.

He said a comeback will provide him an opportunity to “right the wrong of the past.”

“I’ve prayed diligently about the task ahead and I believe I owe a duty to God and my country to take our great party back into government to right the wrongs of the past and to put an end to the cries of the people under the current dispensation,” Mr. Mahama said in a short video moments after the letter was presented to the party executives on his behalf.

He added: “The 2020 election presents our party, the NDC, with a great opportunity to offer yet again, visionary leadership driven by a commitment to create opportunities for all our people and not just a few.”
