The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has slated December 7, 2018 for the election of its flagbearer for the 2020 general elections.

The party’s General Secretary, John Asiedu Nketiah, who announced this while updating journalists about the party’s upcoming internal elections in Accra, Thursday, August 2, 2018, said the decision taken will enable the flagbearer-elect enough time to go around the country to campaign.

He made this revelation moments after opening nominations for the party’s flagbearership contest and also giving the green light to flagbearer hopefuls to begin their campaign.

“On December 7, 2018, the choice will be made over who leads the party. This will give the candidate enough time to go around the country to campaign”, he noted.

The decision by the party falls in line with its Constitution.

Article 42 (1) of the Constitution of the NDC states that “The date and venue for the election of the Presidential Candidate shall be decided by the National Executive Committee but that election shall take place at least twelve (12) months before a national election date if the party is in power and at least twenty-four (24) months if the party is not in power”.

The next general election is slated for December 7, 2020 barring any unforeseeable changes.

Mr. Nketiah, who is also known as ‘General Mosquito’ further announced the postponement of the Regional Conferences that were meant to elect regional executives of the party.

The party had scheduled August 24, 2018 for the event but Mr. Nketiah said due to circumstances beyond their control, they had to postpone it to September 1, 2018.
