Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has hinted at establishing a well trained ‘Ballot Box Protection Unit’ in the 2020 elections.

Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo says it is become necessary for the NDC to toe the line judging by  what happened at La Bawalashie Presby polling station

He however denied that the party has an official  vigilante groups

“ . . As far as I am concerned at the national level, officially, NDC has no vigilante groups but internally trained security personnel who are under control and trained by retired military and police personnel of the party,” he said.

Speaking on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ programme on Friday, the NDC National Chairman described vigilante groups are as group of persons who act violently and do not respect the laws of the land, but their internally trained security men do not defile the laws and orders of the land.

Political vigilantism has gained grounds in Ghanaian politics, especially, in the last decade in the quest for political power.

Ofosu-Ampofo argues that issues of vigilante groups in election cannot be resolved by one party when the others have not made any attempt to call it off.

“Vigilantism can only be abolished in our system only if all political parties at once agree to abolish those groups,” he stated.

He said the NDC will put together strong armed men to face the New Patriotic Party [NPP] as former President John Dramani Mahama had already stated, if what happened at the La Bawalashie Presby polling station repeats itself during the 2020 elections.
