Former Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Victor Smith has said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) probably wouldn’t have been in opposition now, if he had remained in Ghana during the elections.

The NDC under the leadership of Mr. John Dramani Mahama woefully lost power to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the December 7, 2016 elections. The NDC also lost key parliamentary seats to the NPP.

In the presidential polls, Nana Akufo-Addo beat the incumbent, then President John Mahama, with more than one million votes, polling more than 53% of total votes casts as against 44.4% for the President.

Speaking on Accra based radio station Kasapa FM earlier,  Victor Smith who was also the former Eastern Regional Minister stated that he regrets not being in the country during the elections to offer his service to the NDC to retain power.

“My biggest regret is the decision of then President John Mahama to have made me Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Probably if I’d stayed at the Flagstaff House the NDC wouldn’t have been in opposition now.”
