Former Ghana international, Nii Odartey Lamptey has highlighted constant media reports that Black Star players are more concerned about money than playing for the country as the reason for recent low patronage and attendance to the team's games.

Attendance to Black Stars games has seen a significant retrogression in recent times amidst media reports of greed and money consciousness on the part of the playing body.

The team's last 2017 AFCON qualifier game against Rwanda saw a meagre number of Ghanaian supporters at the venue with the capacity of the Accra Sports Stadium being less than half satisfied.

Some pundits have argued that the low stadium attendance at the Rwanda game was due to the fact that Ghana had already qualified for the AFCON tournament thus the outcome of the game was not a matter of importance.

The former Black Stars player has begged to differ on the assertion citing  negative media reports concerning the team as the reason for the apathy being shown by Ghanaians towards the team.
“We should avoid this money issue. Yes, I know that sometimes money is important, but then we should avoid bringing it into the public. We are like: ‘They don’t deserve the thing and we are giving it to them.’ So, the supporters also think they don’t deserve it and they are taking it, [plus the fact that] when they go to the tournament, they don’t win a trophy; that is what is causing all this,” he told Class Sports.
