The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Edudzi Tameklo, has assured residents of Hofedo in Ho, Volta Region, that their concerns over the siting of a proposed fuel station will be thoroughly and transparently addressed.

Speaking during a high-level community engagement on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Mr. Tameklo, along with senior NPA officials, met directly with residents, traditional leaders, and stakeholders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Municipal Planning Office, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

“When this matter came to our attention through the media, we knew we had to come here ourselves,” Mr. Tameklo said. “We wanted to hear directly from those affected, understand their concerns, and work together toward practical, people-centered solutions.”

The siting of the fuel station, being developed by Star Oil Company, has raised concerns among locals who cite potential environmental and safety hazards.

Mr. Tameklo acknowledged that many of the issues raised were technical and require expert, science-based responses—ranging from stricter environmental assessments to improved monitoring systems and measures to limit human exposure to risk.

“We have listened to both the community and the developers,” he noted. “We now have a working plan that puts safety, transparency, and the community’s welfare at the forefront.”

Star Oil’s Chief Operating Officer, Selorm Tetteh Quapepu, also addressed the gathering, affirming the company’s commitment to meeting all regulatory requirements.

“For 26 years, Star Oil has operated under strict safety protocols, both locally and internationally. We remain dedicated to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure peaceful and safe development,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Abel Youngs, praised the NPA for its responsiveness and direct engagement.

“We are not opposed to development,” he stressed, “but it must never come at the cost of our lives.”

Residents expressed cautious optimism after the meeting, saying the involvement of top NPA leadership and regulatory agencies had renewed their confidence that their voices were being heard.

Mr. Tameklo also took a moment to commend the media for spotlighting the issue, urging citizens nationwide to raise alarms whenever public safety is at risk.

“Let me assure the people of Hofedo — this matter is receiving our full attention. Your safety is our priority,” he emphasized.

The NPA confirmed that a detailed investigation is ongoing, and the results will inform the next course of action.
