Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticised the arrest of a regional communications officer Baba Armando, warning it could undermine free speech and democratic norms.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party described the detention of Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando, as “unwarranted and deeply troubling”.
Mr Yakubu had reported to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters in Sunyani around 10:00 GMT after what the party says was an official invitation. He was accompanied by his lawyer, Alfred Tuah Yeboah.
However, upon arrival, police officers reportedly said they had no record of the invitation. Subsequent communication with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra indicated that Mr Yakubu was instead required in the capital.
According to the NPP, the CID in Accra directed regional officers to arrest Mr Yakubu and arrange his transfer. He is currently being transported to Accra.
The party alleges the arrest reflects a broader pattern of intimidation by state authorities under President John Mahama, raising concerns about the protection of civil liberties.
“This development raises serious questions about the state of free speech in Ghana,” the statement said, adding that such actions risk eroding public confidence in democratic institutions.
The NPP also suggested the incident could be an attempt to divert attention from ongoing national issues, including the rising cost of living, fuel prices and utility tariffs.
Police have not yet publicly commented on the arrest.
The NPP has called on authorities to respect due process and uphold the rights of all citizens, urging Ghanaians to remain vigilant in defending democratic freedoms.
