Pro-NPP vigilante group Kandahar boys in Tamale, Northern Region, has violently disrupted a pre-demonstration press conference being held by a group called Coalition of Youth Groups in which its members raised reservations about the dismissal of Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO Dr Prosper Akanbong and subsequent appointment of Dr David Zaawumya Kolbila as his replacement.

The hammer-, stone- and club-wielding Kandahar Boys stormed the Kaladan Park where the press conference was being held and assaulted members of the Coalition of Youth Groups on suspicion that they were NDC moles.

The coalition, however, told journalists that they were merely pressing the authorities for a Dagomba to be appointed as head of the TTH instead of Dr David Zaawumya Kolbila. One person was injured in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Dr Akanbong has refused to hand over to Dr Kolbila, who is a gynaecologist and a lecturer at the University for Development Studies Medical School.

Dr Akanbong was appointed in September 2014 to succeed Dr Ken Sagoe at the time.

Class News’ Northern Regional correspondent, Mohammed Gaddafi, said Dr Akanbong was informed of the appointment of the new CEO by the Ministry of Health through a letter even though the letter was silent on his [Akanbong’s] fate.

He, therefore, said he will not leave office until he receives a letter from the appointing authority to clarify his status.
