Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, a private practitioner, is contesting the summons issued by the Kumasi Traditional Council, arguing that the Supreme Court is the only body with the power to summon people orally.

Ampaw indicates that he is willing to accept the invitation, but he is unsure of the reason for his call.

“Only the Supreme Court has the right to summon anyone verbally. I don’t even know why I am being called. I will go on Monday out of respect, as I speak, I do not know which issue is at stake, which comments I have made,” he emphasized during an interview with Joy FM.

The Kumasi Traditional Council issued the summons in response to what was allegedly said to be disparaging remarks against the Asantehene roughly two weeks ago by NPP Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi, whose real name is Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is anticipated to make an appearance with Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, who is also accused of uttering disparaging remarks against the Ashanti region’s chiefs on the radio.

Maurice Ampaw, in response, accused the Ashanti region’s chiefs of dubious practices like stealing and grabbing girlfriends, and he chastised them for calling Chairman Wontumi.

Maurice Ampaw stuck to his position on the remarks made previous to the summons, claiming that he spoke in the public interest, even though he questioned the priorities of the chiefs.

“I did it in the public interest. It is a matter of public interest. Everything that I said there, I am responsible. Chairman Wontumi is not responsible. If the Traditional Council deems it fit to invite me, they should provide better particulars,” he stated.

The NPP has sent out a statement to its members asking them to hold off on making delicate remarks regarding the Manhyia Palace in the face of the intensifying conflict.
