Thousands of mourners gathered at Independence Square on Saturday night for a deeply emotional candlelight vigil held in honour of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

Dressed mostly in black, fans, musicians, dignitaries, and members of the general public united to pay tribute to the iconic singer whose death has triggered a wave of grief across Ghana and beyond.

The vigil was part of a broader series of commemorative events celebrating the life and musical legacy of one of Ghana’s most beloved and influential artists.

Attendees held lit candles, sang along to some of Daddy Lumba’s timeless classics, and shared personal reflections about his transformative role in Ghanaian music.

The air was filled with both sorrow and gratitude as his songs played, evoking memories of decades of musical excellence.

Speakers at the vigil described Daddy Lumba as a cultural giant, a trailblazer whose music shaped generations and provided the soundtrack to Ghanaian life for over four decades.

“His voice carried our joys and sorrows, our celebrations and heartbreaks. His legacy is woven into the fabric of our nation,” one speaker remarked.

The vigil followed a number of solidarity visits to the bereaved family by individuals and institutions, including former President Akufo-Addo, musicians and people in the entertainment industry.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the country and abroad, as fans, colleagues, and leaders mourn the loss of a true music icon.

Daddy Lumba’s vast catalogue of beloved songs includes “Yemfa Odo,” “Sika Asem,” “Sika,” “Yɛne Wo Sere Kwa,” “Mepaebo,” “Ankwanoma,” “Ɛyɛ N’adom,” and “Makra Mo”, among many others—each cementing his legacy as a pillar of the highlife genre.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
