An attempt by a certain landowner to eject squatters from his land at Dagomba Line in the Asokore Mampong municipality of the Ashanti Region nearly turned bloody.

The angry squatters, who are reported to have lived on the vast land for many years, refused to leave peacefully.

At least three rooms and three stalls have been burnt down at Dagomba Line by some squatters of the slum after they clashed with the police.

Some other properties were also destroyed in the melee.

The incident happened when the landowner secured a court order to demolish the shacks erected by the squatters on his property.

A group of aggrieved squatters attacked the police officers who were deployed to the area to supervise the demolition exercise, with sticks, stones and other missiles.

In the heat of the attack, the police retreated and called for reinforcement as fire officers rushed to the area to douse the flames.

Several of the angry squatters have been arrested and put in police custody.

Mrs Faustina Badu, an official with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) confirmed in an interview with Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah that three people were also injured in the course of the conflict while scores have been displaced.
