Legal counsel for the former Director of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, has indicated that evidence being led by the prosecution is unexpectedly bolstering the defence’s case, even before the defence has formally opened its case.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, December 18, Samuel Atta Akyea said testimony from the prosecution’s second witness appeared to support, rather than undermine, his client’s position.

He stressed that the defence is yet to call any witnesses or make substantive submissions before the court.

According to Mr Atta Akyea, the explanations provided by the prosecution witness were largely exculpatory, offering context that aligns with Mr Adu-Boahene’s conduct and responsibilities during his tenure at the National Signals Bureau.

He added that portions of the testimony addressed sensitive national security matters in a manner that reflects positively on his client’s record in office.

“So far, we have not mounted our defence, but it is rather the prosecution’s second witness who is explaining matters in a way that is very exculpatory of our client,” he said.

“The witness has gone further to clarify certain national security issues which are entirely consistent with our client’s image and actions while in office.”

While noting that the trial remains at an early stage, Mr Atta Akyea maintained that the prosecution’s own evidence is already shedding light on issues that favour the defence, reinforcing confidence in Mr Adu-Boahene’s case as proceedings continue.
