Residents of Agordeke, a fishing community, which serves as the food basket and one of the busiest commercial communities in the Kwahu-Afram Plains North District of the Eastern Region have heavily descended on President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress for failing to provide them with a ferry.

President Mahama, in April this year, during his 'Accounting to the People Tour' in the Region commissioned a new ferry and a Water taxi for residents of Agordeke to re-connect the Afram Plains area to Kpando-Torkor, after the old ferry broke down 10 years ago.

The commissioned ferry, after the ceremony, conveyed the President and his entourage from Agordeke to Kpando–Torkor and has since not returned to Agordeke.

What broke the Camel's back is the fact that nobody has informed them about the whereabouts of the ferry and whether it is coming back or not.

The situation, according to reports, has led to the death of many travelers on the lake through frequent boat accidents, which has negatively impacted on both transportation and the local economy, grounding trading activities in the area to a standstill.

The Mahama-led NDC administration, in the run up to the 2012 general Elections, promised the people of the area that if the party wins the election, it would provide a ferry for them to ease transportation in the area.

This was after news reached the party that the people were having difficulties when it comes to crossing the Volta Lake to do business.

The promise, according to the residents, caused them to vote massively for the NDC in the 2012 elections, but for the party to have come for the faulty ferry, with the intention to repair it, but has since not brought it back to Agordeke, is rather unfortunate.

Scores of residents who spoke to the paper expressed disappointment in President Mahama for deceiving them and failing to fulfill his promises of rehabilitating their roads, building nursing training schools and construction of the Community Day Senior High School, among others.

The residents, who noted that, the absence of the ferry has made crossing the lake difficult, however, promised to vote against the NDC in the upcoming December polls since they have taken them for granted for far too long.

A staff (name withheld) working on the ferry told this reporter that, the ferry developed a fault after it had been commissioned and, therefore, an order was made for parts from abroad to fix it.

He, however, blamed management of the Volta Lake Transport Company, operators of the ferry and the government, for failing to communicate to the people about the state of affairs of the ferry.
