Rita Oppong, a Pre-Vocational Skills teacher, has been adjudged the National Best Teacher as Ghana joins the world to commemorate World Teachers’ Day on Wednesday October 5, 2016.

Ms Oppong, who teaches at the Soowah Din Memorial 2 Junior High School in the Adentan municipality of the Greater Accra Region, gets a three-bedroom house built at a place of her choice, a laptop computer, and GHS100,000 to be deposited into a Treasury bill account as her prize.

Samuel Oppong, a teacher at Ghana Senior High Technical School, in the Western Region, came second and Suleiman Inusah of the Sacred Hearts Senior High School, Brong Ahafo Region, placed third.

Held at Sunyani, the awards ceremony was based on the theme: ‘Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status’ with a total of 43 teachers and 32 schools being honoured.

President John Mahama, who was the guest of honour, indicated in a speech that government would not relent in its efforts to develop vocational and technical training institutions.

“We are prioritising technical vocational education and training and so currently under a special programme, the Development of Skills for Industry programme, we have selected one technical school from each region, including two polytechnics and the University of Education, Kumasi Campus, for a complete and total upgrade of their facilities,” he said.

“They are receiving accommodation for staff, technical workshop, lecture rooms, and many other such facilities. It is our intention to strengthen the linkage between these institutions and industry so that the products that come out of these technical and vocational training institutions can find the place in the world of work.”
