The Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified patrol at Old Tafo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region following threat of reprisals after an alleged attack by some Zongo youth over the weekend.
Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Tanko, confirmed to Joy News there is a contingent of joint police and military presence in the area.
He said the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has declared a 6a.m to 6p.m curfew in the area.
Meanwhile, some Zongo youth have expressed their preparedness to co-operate with the police to arrest the perpetrators of the alleged attack.
“We just heard the sad news which is very bad on our side because most at times we don’t even know what the Zongo boys go to do. We are appealing to the Tafo hene and his people. We will try to find out those who went there during the incidence and whatever be the case then the police should be involved and we will try as much as possible to find the culprits so that the law will deal with them,” one Zongo youth told Joy News.
He says considering all the happenings “our brothers didn’t do well at all. I am highly disappointed. For a small number to dent the image of the rest is very bad.”
Another also appealed to the Muslim leaders in the area to ensure the culprits are dealt with.
According to him, “coming from Zongo I am pleading with the Zongo leaders, the Imam, and others to deal with the culprits because we can’t take anymore curfew.”
At least fifteen (15) Zongo youth are alleged to have assaulted one Kojo Antwi in the area over a disagreement.
This angered the non-Muslim youth who threatened to retaliate.
Tafo Township was placed under a curfew by the Ministry of Interior backed by the Tafo Traditional Council in February 2016 following clashes between some Muslim youth and non-Muslim youth of the area over a piece of cemetery land.
