Former Ghana U-23 coach Ibrahim Tanko has made a startling revelation that enroute to the CAF U-23 AFCON tournament some members of the Executive Council did not want Ghana to qualify.

He says these Executive Council members were praying that the Black Meteors should not qualify since their players had been dropped from the squad.

According to Ibrahim Tanko it is very difficult for coaches of the national teams to sometimes drop players whose managers are Executive Council members.

Ghana nearly missed out on the 2019 AFCON U-23 tournament in Egypt after drawing 1-1 with Algeria at home before securing qualification away from home.

Ibrahim Tanko says after the 1-1 scoreline some two members of the Executive Council were happy Ghana drew and were praying we fail to qualify for the tournament since their players were not selected.

He revealed in an interview with the Nabila Show that two Executive Council members were praying Ghana should not qualify.

“Sometimes it is very difficult because of some of the players whose managers are executive committee members. So sometimes it is not easy to drop a player.

“I can tell you even when we played against Algeria here [in Ghana] 1-1, I know two exco-members who were very happy because I dropped their players at that match,” the former Ghana U-23 coach said.

He continued, “So all of them, I think most Ghanaians thought we were going to lose since we played 1-1 here in Ghana.

“We went there to qualify to Egypt but if I tell you why I dropped the players I even saved the players.

“Because if I come out to give the reason why I dropped them, I will have collapsed their career. So let’s leave it there and move on.”he concluded.,
