Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, officially launched the second edition of the Democracy Cup at the D.F. Annan Auditorium, reaffirming Parliament’s commitment to using sport as a vehicle for democratic engagement and national unity.

First introduced in 2024, the Democracy Cup is a parliamentary initiative aimed at promoting democratic values, peaceful coexistence, and civic participation through the unifying power of football.

The event has quickly become a major feature in Ghana’s democratic and sporting landscape.

In his address, Speaker Bagbin lauded the impact of the initiative and pledged Parliament’s continued support for its growth.

“I want to affirm this laudable initiative and assure you that it is here to stay. It is here to make a lasting impact on our democratic development. The launch of this second edition is a powerful testament to what we can achieve as a nation,” he stated.

This year’s Democracy Cup will culminate in a headline clash between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The match is expected to draw large crowds and national attention.

In addition to the main fixture, a special curtain-raiser will feature a Parliament Select Side squaring off against a team of former Black Stars players, adding prestige and excitement to the day’s events.

Another standout feature of the 2025 edition is the decision to channel part of the proceeds into professional FIFA-certified training for physical education teachers — a move Speaker Bagbin described as a long-term investment in youth and grassroots development.

The launch event attracted prominent figures including Members of Parliament, former national football stars, and Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association.

Organizers promise that the second edition will be even more thrilling, with engaging side attractions and activities designed to enhance the fan experience and reinforce the link between democracy and sport.
