A teacher at Nyinahini Catholic Senior High School is in police custody after a video capturing him allegedly assaulting a female student on campus spread rapidly across social media, drawing widespread public outrage and prompting swift action from education authorities.

The Ghana Education Service confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, through a Facebook post by its Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi.

“The Nyinahini Catholic SHS teacher seen in the viral video fighting a female student has been arrested. The Regional Education Directorate is investigating the matter.

A full report will be submitted to headquarters,” he wrote.

The footage, which has horrified many who have seen it, shows the teacher repeatedly striking the female student while fellow students nearby desperately plead with him to stop.

In one particularly disturbing moment, the teacher is seen lifting the girl and throwing her to the ground. Bystanders can be heard urging him to restrain himself, reminding him that she is both a student and a girl.

The teacher, visibly enraged throughout the confrontation, is also heard responding with the question, “Is she aware she is a lady?”

The precise trigger for the altercation has not been established, with school authorities and the GES yet to provide any context surrounding the events that led to the confrontation.

The Regional Education Directorate has launched an investigation and is expected to compile a full report for submission to GES headquarters, which will determine what further disciplinary or legal steps are taken against the teacher.

The incident has reignited urgent conversations about student safety, the boundaries of discipline in schools and the need for stronger mechanisms to protect learners from abuse within educational institutions.
