The watchdog role of the media has ensured that the positives and negative conditions of members of society are highlighted or exposed. In this connection the various segments of the media are called into play either individually or collectively to to play the expected role (s).

The media may be segmented as print, radio, TV, online and social and new media. Each segment is controlled by its owner. The only true and properly independent media is the social and new media.

Its owners are undetermined, uncontrolled by the same source of authority scattered around with different levels of influences. This is the only true independent media.

Of course that comes with excesses and uncontrolled abuses. The other segments are strictly controlled as to content character and timing for publications. As a student of the media I decided to observe the deep happenings of media activities over the various stories on the Ghana’s ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

He seems to enjoy considerable media support from the controlled media. He has however suffered extreme criticism from the true independent media. I believe his support from the media is driven primarily by the fact that he’s a journalist who seems to enjoy solidarity from his colleagues.

There’s nothing wrong with that except that in most cases about Anas some journalists have thrown professionalism to the dogs and defended him hook line and sinker. My media colleagues in some media houses have even questioned the legitimacy of decisions taken by their management to black out all stories critical of Anas.

But is this one too cronyism or journalism. I will support a position like that when it’s taken by the management of crusading new guide where Anas is a shareholder. It won’t serve the interest of society for media houses with the hallmarks of professionalism and high ethical standards to tow this line.

Two English speaking stations and a local language speaking station in Accra have regrettably been cited for this position. Individuals identified to be outspoken on radio and the social media have been contracted to slow down on Anas. This is strange If Anas has nothing to hide why are these measures being instituted to help him. Anas has demonstrated he doesn’t need such help. Let him receive the applause when it’s due and face the criticism when it’s generated against him. At this time he has bitten more than he can chew. Allow him to face the music.

There’s no need for any special favors or preferential treatment for him. Ghanaians are fed up with his corrupt practices. If the media Shields him from his wrong doings against society the natural consequences of his ills will follow one day. An explosion will occur one day which NOBODY I repeat NOBODY can stop.

A natural societal rejection of Anas will happen where the emotional reaction of people’s pent up feelings will explode with direct consequences. Such reactions are usually not planned or can be right forecast. The time nature and form of the reaction cannot be determined.

We will get there if the media and authorities continue to protect Anas for sometime. He has wronged many people and demonstrated enough bad faith and injustice to people. A word to the wise is enough.
